Joshua vs. Povetkin: Fight date, start time, card, TV stream in Canada

It isn't the fight boxing fans were hoping for, but it is the next best thing. Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua defends his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles against former titleholder Alexander Povetkin on Saturday, Sept. 22 from Wembley Stadium in London.

Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) and WBC champion Deontay Wilder had been in serious negotiations for a late-fall bout. Unfortunately, the two sides were unable to come to an agreement after going back-and-forth for a number of months. In the midst of negotiations, the WBA ordered Joshua to face Povetkin or be stripped of his belt. Talks with Wilder came to an end and a Povetkin bout materialized shortly thereafter.

What have the fighters been saying?

Anthony Joshua

“I don’t see any reason why the Wilder fight wouldn’t happen next. It’s like telling a kid there is no Santa, they won’t believe it. I don’t believe this fight shouldn’t happen next if I get past Povetkin.

“We were close a few times of getting it done. I’ve already signed my part of the contract. I’m about doing the business, and then talking about it. Wilder can come on Sept 22. If he wants to get in the ring, that’s no problem, but he ain’t getting in the ring unless he signs a contract. You’re not going to make a name out of this. Sign the contract and let’s talk about the fight.”

Alexander Povetkin on positive tests for banned substances

“I have nothing to do with it, and I am very well deserved of the fight I’m getting [with Joshua]. I am here for a reason, this was a mandatory. I had to defeat other opponents to get this position. I have no idea [what happened]. After the first time I was caught I signed a secondary anti-doping full-time testing programme. I am clean and I know that I was clean then.”

Anthony Joshua vs Alexander Povetkin Live stream, TV channel – boxing preview

Anthony Joshua puts his IBF, WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles on the line against Alexander Povetkin on Saturday 22 September at Wembley.
A unification title fight with Deontay Wilder was put on hold when it was announced Joshua’s next challenger would be 39-year-old Povetkin; who has suffered just one professional defeat in a career spanning 13 years at the hands of Wladimir Klitschko.
At 6 ft 2 in, the Russian is a relatively small heavyweight but could present Joshua with one of the trickiest examinations of his abilities to date. Povetkin is the champion’s shortest opponent in terms of height and reach, something he has used to his advantage in knocking out men Joshua’s size in the past.
Joshua need look no further than Povetkin’s performance on the undercard of his title defence against Joseph Parker last March; brutally stopping David Price with a thunderous left.
